Since 1936

The club

Born in 1936 around a table at the Moulin-Rouge café, FC Rhexia-Vessy has been writing its history in blue and white for 90 years.

Once upon a time…

In 1936,
in Geneva

In the spring of 1936, a group of friends working at the Journal de Genève newspaper decided to create a football team to play friendly matches.

The team was first called AMICAL FC, a name rejected by the Swiss Football Association (ASF), which felt it could cause confusion.

Long debates followed, during which the names Mail, Rex, Bourdon, Alliance, Standard, Coriolan, Léman and Dufour were proposed one after another.

In the end, the name Rhexia FC was adopted unanimously.

This strange-sounding word must have caught people’s imagination. Of Romansh origin, it means “little queen” or “little flower”.

Minutes of the meeting of 30 April 1936

For some time, there had been talk within the « Journal de Genève » of forming a football team.

To carry this idea through, a meeting was called and held on Thursday 30 April, at 8.45 pm, at the Moulin-Rouge café.

After a short presentation by our comrade Zbinden, Mr Chevigny said a few words about training and physical fitness.

Mr Jaccard then asked that we proceed in an orderly manner, since we are founding a serious society and not one « just for a laugh », as our friend Leuba believed.

The Committee was then appointed: Mr Jaccard was named president, Mr Jacquier vice-president and Mr Tranchet treasurer.

Mr Zbinden, secretary. Mr Lucien Fetz, steward. Mr Chevigny, assistant member and coach.

The Committee is responsible for finding a name for our Society.

The monthly fee for active members was set at 1 franc; for passive members at 3 francs per year; and honorary membership cards at 5 francs.

Our president is responsible for obtaining permission to play at Varembé, the ground that seems the most central for the team.

Mr Chevigny agrees to arrange physical training with Mr Rey, to lead the training sessions and to choose the colour of the kit.

During his meeting with Mr Guedet, president of the A.C.G.F.A., Mr Zbinden will look into the championship we may consider entering.

Training sessions were set for every Wednesday from 6 pm to 7.30 pm; the next general meeting was set for Thursday 13 May at 6 pm.

Meeting closed at 10.30 pm. — The Secretary: Aug. Zbinden
